Intracellular nitrate storage by diatoms can be an important nitrogen pool in freshwater and marine ecosystems

چکیده
Abstract Identifying and quantifying nitrogen pools is essential for understanding the cycle in aquatic ecosystems. The ubiquitous diatoms represent an overlooked nitrate pool as they can accumulate intracellularly utilize it assimilation, dissipation of excess photosynthetic energy, Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium (DNRA). Here, we document global co-occurrence intracellular phototrophic microbial communities freshwater ( n = 69), coastal 44), open marine 4) habitats. Diatom abundance total contents water columns, sediments, mats, epilithic biofilms were highly significantly correlated. In contrast, diatom community composition had only a marginal influence on contents. concentrations inside cells exceeded ambient ?100–4000-fold. collective accounted <1% pelagic habitats 65–95% benthic Accordingly, nitrate-storing are emerging significant contributors cycling, particular through activity under anoxic conditions.

Intracellular Nitrate of Marine Diatoms as a Driver of Anaerobic Nitrogen Cycling in Sinking Aggregates
Diatom-bacteria aggregates are key for the vertical transport of organic carbon in the ocean. Sinking aggregates also represent pelagic microniches with intensified microbial activity, oxygen depletion in the center, and anaerobic nitrogen cycling. Since some of the aggregate-forming diatom species store nitrate intracellularly, we explored the fate of intracellular nitrate and its availability...

متن کاملContrasting size evolution in marine and freshwater diatoms.
Diatoms are key players in the global carbon cycle and most aquatic ecosystems. Their cell sizes impact carbon sequestration and energy transfer to higher trophic levels. We report fundamental differences in size distributions of marine and freshwater diatoms, with marine diatoms significantly larger than freshwater species. An evolutionary game theoretical model with empirical allometries of g...

1. The spatial distribution of the most important subtidal habitats (coral reefs, coral carpets, seagrass meadows, sand with corals, macroids, mud, hardgrounds) and mangroves was mapped in northern Safaga Bay, Red Sea, Egypt. Coral communities were analysed separately for their ecological and spatial patterns. This, coupled with information about major current patterns in the bay, provides a fr...
